Trader: Sets the Bid/Ask price since he sees fit, perhaps based on market conditions, possibly not. Paid from the spread he decides to set.
ECN: Supposedly matches orders between traders. Does not modify prices, just posts orders from all sources. Traders typically consist of other retail traders and liquidity providers. Think of it. This is actually the Broker model, and is compensated by comission.
STP: Supposedly gives retail trader access to best price of participating liquidity poviders without intervention. Could be compensated by cut of spread or commission.
You have to be a KID to believe in this bullshit. You're always trading from a dealer, and it does not matter via not or ECN.
Just open your eyes! It is just another marketing tool. Traders are getting money not because the traders on the other side.
