View Full Version : Why doesn't anyone talk about the psychological risk of operating well?
Everyone talks about the risk when you lose, the drawdown, the revenge trading, the over-leverage, but what about the emotional risk involved in a good run of operations? I’m talking about that false sense of invincibility, when you start to win often and without realizing it you operate worse, more confident, more reckless. No one comments on it, but it’s a real danger.
Today I closed the fifth positive operation of the week and instead of being happy, I’m uncomfortable. I don’t know if to operate anymore, if to stop, if I’m doing it right or if it’s simple luck. The ego wants to keep winning, but logic tells me I’m getting into a dangerous zone. I’d like to know if anyone else has felt that way.

Finally someone says it. That excess of confidence is just as destructive as fear. Operating well often clouds you, because you begin to think that you already “have it resolved”, and that’s when the market breaks you down.
That which you describe is called a profit euphoria, and yes, it is a brutal mental trap. When you think better than you are, you stop following your own rules. It cost me several weeks of setback.

What an exaggeration some... now winning is also a problem? If you win, enjoy it and I followed. The problem is not knowing how to lose, not the other way around.
For some of us, emotions don't go away just because there are green numbers. If you don't understand the point, you'd better stop by.
Totally according to the thread. The most difficult thing about trading is not technique, but self-control. Winning often has made me lose more times than the defeats themselves.
I have a clear rule: if I win 3 days in a row, I don’t operate in the room. It doesn’t matter if there’s a super sign or if the market calls me out. That pause saves me from overconfidence.

I would like to see the real statistics of those who lose money after a good streak. I’m sure more than one would be surprised.

The euphoria is fought with humility and routine. When I do well, I double my discipline. If not, I know that I will pay for it expensive.

I'd say it's easier to be afraid of losing than afraid of winning, but the second is more treacherous, because it looks positive at first.

Look also at the opposite: after winning a lot, comes the "I don't want to risk the earned", and that also blocks. You stop operating for fear of returning it.

Very good point. I had not seen it like this, but it happened to me this week. Three days winning, the fourth operated as if the market was my slave. Spoiler: it was not.

The craziest thing is that no one prepares you for that. There are millions of books on how to handle losses, but how many on how to hold a winning streak without becoming an idiot?

Good topic, good reflection. We should talk more about this on the forum. Winning is as dangerous as losing if you don’t have internal control.
The problem of excess confidence after a positive streak is deeply linked to how our brain works in relation to positive reinforcement. Every time we win, our brain releases dopamine, which makes us feel euphoric and pushes us to repeat that behavior that originated it. The dilemma is that in trading, not always what generates profits in the short term is sustainable in the long term. Many times we gain by probability, not by making correct decisions, and that confusion can be lethal. Also, the ego starts to inflate silently. We no longer validate our entries as before, we start to “feel” that the price is going to go where we believe, instead of analyzing it coldly. This makes us operate more, risk more, and we start to alter the rules that led us to initial success. The problem is not to win, but to stop doing what led us to win. That’s why it’s essential to have mechanisms of containment when we’re on the spot. As we establish limits of daily or weekly loss, we should have limits of consecutive profits. To change one day after three successful trades, to reduce the size of lot when we stop using certain goals, or even to make it.

Great contribution, just what I needed to read today.
Very good what you say. Do you have any personal system to stop in such situations?
You got past this reflection, I print it and I stick it on my wall.

Thanks for sharing this, it really helped me understand why I boycott myself just when I'm winning.
If you're on a roll, doesn't it make sense to take advantage of the inertia of the market?
Very good reflection, it's something that almost no one explains to you when you start.

Thanks for your contribution, it opened my eyes. I’m just coming out of a good streak and I felt invincible.
Excellent post, it made me think a lot about how I handle my operation when I'm positive.
But don't you think stopping can make you lose opportunities? Sometimes stopping is more harmful.

Thank you, this kind of message is worth gold.
It made me remember when I doubled an account and then I lost it because I didn't stop.
And how do you stop if you're operating well, with analysis and without emotions?

Yes, but not always stopping is the solution. Sometimes you just have to adjust the risk, keep operating.

Thank you for this text. I will keep it as a reminder for my euphoria days.
I think it's key to the profit limits, I've never raised it that way.
Aren't you taking this to an end?
Interesting approach, but I'd like to see real examples with numbers.
