View Full Version : Does anyone really make money from chartist patterns?
Lately I have been going through years of screenshots and notes about patterns like Shoulder-Head-Bomb, double floor, triangles, flags, etc. And I have to say: the ratio of success has been ridiculous. Or the pattern is not confirmed, or the price breaks and then turns around as if it were mocking. Is there really someone here who earns money consistent only with Chartist analysis? I’m starting to think it’s pure marketing.

Man, if you think the market is gonna respect your little drawings like Newton's laws, you're gonna crash.
I use them, but not as an entry trigger but as a general context. They help me to have a mental map, but I would never open a trade just because it looks like a triangle.

Have you tried serious backtesting or just see if they look alike? Because one thing is to see a pattern and another is to have concrete rules to validate it.

They work for me. What happens is that you can’t just use them. You have to combine them with volume, with relevant levels and especially with price action. But of course, if you expect the double floor to work like a magic button, you’re ready.
What's amazing is that in 2025 we still believe that chartist patterns have some predictive value. The market is random, don't fool yourself.

Chartism is not an exact science, but if you know how to interpret the market structure well, it can give you very good clues.

I prefer to see patterns as zones of interest. The pattern itself does not matter so much, what interests me is if there is institutional reaction at that point.

What a mania with discrediting anything that is not algorithmic. Chartism is still alive because it works, even if it is not perfect.
They taught me how to identify patterns, and I even made money in demo.

Your problem is not charism, it's your risk management. The pattern may fail, of course, but if you risk the minimum and use confirmation, the system holds up.
The funniest thing is that everyone criticizes the patterns, but as soon as they see one form, the mouse's finger goes away. We're creatures of habits, what we're going to do to them.

If you need a pattern to work with 100% certainty to use it, you'd better not come near this business.

I'm more of a follower of liquidity and structure, but I don't despise Chartism. It's like a compass, not a GPS.

Thanks for opening this thread. I was thinking the same thing, and now I see that I’m not the only one. I’ve also lost more with patterns than I’ve won. But I think the problem is to expect them to work as recipes. Maybe we should use them more as a way to visualize the intention of the market than as rigid input signals. Let's see, let's put a little order in all this debate on chartist patterns, because what many do not understand is that the real value of a pattern is not in its form, but in what it represents in terms of market psychology. Only the statistics are included. If you are able to take advantage of it, for example, it is not just a pretty figure; it is a manifestation of a change in intent between buyers and sellers. The left shoulder is the first resistance; the head shows the last impulse of the buyers; and the right shoulder indicates weakness. Are they going to work always? Of course they are not. But when it is given in a relevant area, with confirmation of volume and structure, their probability of success goes up quite. Many traders get frustrated because they look for certainties where there are only odds. This is trading, not physical quantum. If a pattern has a 60% success and your risk management is fine-tuned, you are already in advantage. The problem comes when people use the patterns as a definitive entry point without valid context, without looking at whether the market is trend or if there are news on the way.

Thank you for putting a little sanity in between the chaos.
So the patterns themselves are useless if there is no structure behind them? Why use them then? Excellent comment. I keep the sentence the pattern should be a consequence of the market, not the starting point. Pure gold.
You say we have to do backtesting, but how do you evaluate patterns that are so subjective?

Don't you think so much theory can overwhelm the beginner? Sometimes something more direct is better.
Thank you for sharing such comprehensive contributions. That’s just what’s missing in most forums.

But don't you think sometimes that structure you mention can only be seen in retrospect?
So, if classic charlatism is obsolete, why are so many institutional traders still using it?
And what do you think of harmonic patterns? Would they enter into this critique or are they a separate case?
