However,....why is it called loonie? I know why cable is cable and kiwi is kiwi. It's called the Loonie due to the Great Northern Loon (a bird) or something like that. It use to be (and maybe still is) on their coins.
Many people believe it's since the currency moves around like a lunatic. That's can also be true.

It's CAD, also loonie is the duck bird commonly lived in Canada. All these are beautiful bird.

The first time I heard it it was a Canadian newspaper seller in Montreal that advised me that a magazine was 5 loonies.

As has been pointed out, an engraving of a loon is about a Canadian coin. More specifically, it is about the $1 coin. In Canada, if you lend someone a loonie you are lending them a Canadian $1 coin, not any Canadian coin.
