Only my opinion.

I have done around 6-10 box options on Oanda.

What Shan outlined is exactly what I experienced. I was not happy with the risk/reward ratio to the box options; I discovered it was better simply to exchange the darned reversal. I'm looking at options on FX stocks today and they seem to be preferable to box options at Oanda.

I had been using them on 1D charts, working on reversals/pin bars . I didn't have any difficulties with abrupt price spikes carrying the box out, or any other stop hunting issue on this time frame. But I did believe that the risk/reward ratio was not appropriate. I attempted either touch the box and don't touch the box options and for me they were equally unsatisfactory.

I had been playing them for reversals and a continuation of a movement. They may have value for picking up money in a range-bound market but I am not certain as I never attempted this.

    Cheers,
    Linc.

inform me if im wrong about only being able to sell back to oanda, but im pretty sure that is right.
It is correct that you are only able to offer them back to Oanda, however it's slightly odd since it's not really an alternative in the purest form, I think.

Basically, you pick a start time and an end time and then a range (that gives you a visual box on a time/price chart). Then a pop-up informs you what the payout would be if you hit on the box (if you think that the box will probably get hit over the time frame ) or what the payout would be if the price overlooks the box (if you think the price won't touch your box within the period). . .mind you, your payout will be based on how much you risk. Thus if you risk $1000 to have the price miss your box to get another 10 minutes, you might only get $50. . .of course, if your box will not get hit, then you lose that cash.

Therefore, in a Feeling, there is not a market. . .Oanda only let's the market hit or miss the price...

I also did like 8 or 7 box alternatives, but always expected my goal to be missed (I typically drew the boxes only 5 minutes away in the current bar, 10 minutes broad and 20 pips away in the current market). Doing so, I netted about $600 with the trades I made (the market was not volatile and trending away in your box). It had been enough to do, and required no lengthy chart watching, which was fine. On the other hand, the risk/reward ratio was just F'ed up...$1000:$50...??? ...I never felt wrong about the boxes I had been putting, but you must think it would be in Oanda's greatest interest to control the price just so they did not have to payout. . .because there was no true market it was like daring Oanda to touch this box. . .not exactly something I felt like continuing to do...

Yeah, just throwing this in as message #100 hehe
*if* if were a proper market they'd be OK. I'd love to sell, rather than buy, as Merlin outlined in another thread on the Oanda box choices. The arb. Opportunities would be interesting if more brokers set up a similar egy.

*shrugs* they are enjoyable, but they do not look like a serious money-making tool for a trader. I would not bet any serious money together.

    Hello everybody,
I just attempted to price the exact same box at oanda's demo account and this is what I got:
Strike box: Purchase $1000 to get a payout of $1707.04
Miss box: Purchase $1000 to get a payout of $1396.62

Presently there are just two possible outcomes for this, either the box is struck or it is not, and thus according to oanda's rates the probability for each outcome is:
    Pr(Strike ) = 36.94%
    Pr(Miss)=41.73%

Now these two do not sum to 100 percent and so Oanda has a 21.33% margin! I.e. in the future they plan to generate a 21% profit on their box options (assuming of course that buyers of those box options simply predict where the market is likely with 50% precision ).

In fairness to oanda that is still better than the neighborhood bag which has a margin of about 35% on sports games this weekend.

Still seems like gaming to me though.

The real difficulty with these box options is that as soon as you buy them, there's noone to sell them back to except oanda!!! Its one sided market, like a casino, where the chances are fixed against you. You may only play against the house, you cant bet against other players like a true market.

Totally agreed. . .pure gaming, with probably only slightly better odds than playing roulette.

I have used them to get macro movement gambling, the odds are bordering on reasonable when you reach triple higher or payout. Bought upside boxes with eurusd at 1.16 and 1.18 levels. Could make it a momentum gamble where you only lose if it stays flat.

Yes it is gambling, with so many pairs to trade at Oanda you're always better off trading.
