Thread: Why doesn't anyone talk about managing mental energy in trading?

I've been thinking about this for months. Everyone talks about managing risk, capital, leverage, etc. But almost nobody mentions something that for me has become more important than all that: mental energy management. If you get exhausted on the chart, you're dead. Just as your system has 80% right. If your head is somewhere else, you're going to run it wrong. Am I the only one who's noticed this? Or is it really not spoken because it's easier to blame the system than to accept that you're dealing with a mess with your head?

You are more right than a saint. I myself stopped operating after eating because I was slow, scattered and without focus. I changed the schedule early in the morning and the difference is brutal.

Yes, of course, now it turns out you have to sleep eight hours, meditate and eat gluten-free to operate well. This is trading, not a spiritual retreat.

The funny thing is that it is true. Many believe that losing is because of the market, when they are actually operating after arguing with the couple or without having slept. Zero focus.

It happened to me. When I was backtesting everything flowed, but live I couldn’t replicate the results. It wasn’t the system, it was me. I started to keep an emotional diary next to the operating journal and there I saw the pattern.

I can't believe this topic doesn't have any more answers. Mental burnout trading is real. It drains you to analyze, wait, run, lose, win, etc. And no one teaches you to dose that.

It doesn’t seem that deep. In the end, the one who can’t operate well in any state doesn’t work. You can’t depend on being “at your best” to trade.

What if you see it from the perspective of a high-performance athlete? Don’t you think they also manage energy, power, concentration, rest cycles? Trading shouldn’t be different.

Totally. I now divide my days into blocks. Two analysis sessions of 90 min maximum and then rest. Before I could be 6 hours glued to the chart without doing anything productive.

They lack street. The market does not wait for you to be motivated. If you are tired, do not operate. Period. The problem is that many want to trade every day for anxiety, not for probability.
