Yes, Korea was significantly less modern compared to Japan (they were called the hermit kingdom) but modernizing a nation does not give one the right to destroy its own culture. Koreans were forced to learn and speak Japanese during this time, in school and so many older Koreans are eloquent in Japanese yet despise the language.
Koreans freaked out a couple of years back because a nationally utilized Japanese text book maintained things along the lines of what you are saying, the colonization was good for korea, etc.. In reality, what happened to korea - I understand, I've been there, I talked to lots of elder Koreans who would literally show me their scars .
What Japan did for them? Your view is so dumb - Japan ransacked the place, everything out of looting amethyst mines to destroying nearly every historic building in the nation (try finding a construction in Korea that has been built prior to the Japanese got there, its tough), I do not understand where you are coming off with this concept the Japanese some how did Korea a favor but you are way off base. As for modernizing Korea, the US did a lot more towards that conclusion during and after the war compared to the Japanese did. Koreas happened throughout the 70's however, thats another story.
So far as the dates you are citing, I do not have enough time to drag into a thorough history lesson with exact dates. This is a forum and that I was outlining how the Western and Korea will be on different sides of the same political issues. Do you understand what Dok-do is? Probably not! There's not much point in debating about something that you have such a knowledge and perspective on. Get back to trading
